Creating Space for Community
We're delighted to announce an exciting new chapter for our community.
Tathagata Meditation Center has acquired a parcel of land adjacent to our current property at 1148 Roberts Avenue. The newly purchased lot, located at 1156 Roberts Avenue in San Jose, spans just over half an acre and represents a meaningful step forward in supporting the growth and needs of our sangha.
As many of you know, we’ve been planning to build the Sangha Quarters and a dormitory for female yogis on our properties at 1138 and 1148 Roberts Avenue. We’re currently in the process of applying for a construction permit, but it has proven to be more complex and costly than expected—largely due to rising construction costs and the historic status of the 100-year-old house at 1148 Roberts Avenue. We're now working with a property-history researcher to determine whether demolition and new construction will be permitted.

In the midst of this process, we learned that the neighboring property at 1156 Roberts Avenue—the final piece we’ve long hoped to complete our space—might be available. We reached out to the owner and were able to purchase it for $1,785,000. Including escrow and related fees, the total cost came to $1,793,000.
With the new land at 1156 Roberts Avenue, our center now forms a full rectangle over three acres—peacefully tucked between Lucretia Avenue and a quiet park, making it an even more ideal space for meditation. However, due to the cost of this purchase, we’ve had to delay plans for the female yogi dormitory. Instead, we’ll focus on remodeling 1148 Roberts Avenue into the Sangha Quarters.
Our immediate goal is to raise funds for the new land and the remodeling project. To do this, we’ve divided the land into 20,000 symbolic “lots,” each valued at $100. We warmly invite you to support us by contributing as many lots as you are able.
Your ongoing generosity has made everything we’ve built so far possible. We hope you’ll continue to walk this path with us as we grow the center for the benefit of all.
If you’d like to support this effort, please complete the donation form and send it back to us. Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity. May you be well, happy, and at peace.
With metta,
Tathagata Meditation Center
